10 Styling Tips And Tricks To A Slimmer Silhouette.

10 Styling Tips And Tricks To A Slimmer Silhouette.

1. Wear a matching belt
We all know the cinching belt rule, but it works even better if you pick a belt in the same colour as what’s underneath. Wearing a purple belt around a purple dress will still nip you in, but because it’s the same colour it won’t break the line of your body, which results in a smoother, leaner silhouette. Clever, huh?

2. Colour in the right place
Darker colours are slimming, yes, but that doesn’t mean you have to dress in head-to-toe black. Wear darker colours on the areas you want to slim, and experiment with bolder colours elsewhere – so, if you’ve got great legs but want to tone down your top half, pop on a pair of brightly coloured trousers and team it with a dark top.

3. Panelling
This is all about creating an illusion. Dresses or tops with panels of contrasting colour can be great for slimming down your waist, and trousers with racing stripes at the side work in the same way for your legs.

4. Stripes
This works in the same way as above. Depending on their direction and size, stripes can have a brilliant slimming effect ; vertical will elongate your body, and chevron stripes (v-shaped) will draw the eye inward to create an hourglass illusion. But that’s not to say horizontal can’t do the same – so long as the width is kept to a minimum, they can be flattering, too.

5. Long necklaces
Yeah, this sounds too easy to be true, but a long, simple necklace that finishes at the centre of your tummy is a tried and tested trick. It draws the eye down and in, elongating your torso and emphasising your slimmest point.

6. Add height
We can’t all wear five inch stilettos all day, but a little heel is great for improving posture and adding height (instant slimming points). You’ll be surprised at the difference even an inch can make.

7. Avoid excess baggage
This is simple, really. The more excess material you wear, the more bulk it adds to your body. Avoid wearing anything overly baggy (unless you plan on using the belt trick to reign it in) and opt for lighter weight fabrics like cashmere and jersey (anything too dense or stiff, like neoprene or heavy quilting, will have the same bulk-effect on your shape). Don’t rule out opting for something fitted, either – even though it feels safe to stay loose, showing your shape is actually far more flattering than hiding it away.

8. Work with your body and balance it out
Got an hourglass figure? Nip it in! Bottom heavy? Add some structure to your shoulders! We can’t do much about what we’re born with – embrace it and learn how to balance. If your bottom heavy, opt for something with strong shoulders to balance out your halves – similarly, if you’re blessed with an hourglass shape, opt for fit and flare pieces that flaunt your curves.

9. Drape it
Draped pieces are an easy way to elongate your body because they draw the eye downwards, but the trick is to avoid anything too shapeless (see above) and fussy, or it’ll have the opposite effect. The best way to do this is to opt for a shirt, say, that’s shorter at the front and longer at the back – this shows off your waist (which gives you shape), but draws the eye downwards (lengthening and slimming). Waterfall jackets and cardigans are another great option.

10. Shapewear
Shapewear is your friend – don’t feel bad for getting acquainted. We all need a helping hand, and if fitting into that dress means throwing on the Spanx, who cares?
